Sam and the Lucky Money Written By Karen Chinn and Illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa

A little boy named Sam receives a red envelope of money for Chinese New Year and is eager to buy himself whatever he wants. He realizes that everything he would like is too expensive and in the end gives his money away to a homeless man with bare feet.
Target Age: 1st and 2nd grade
Springboards for lessons: This book can be used as an introduction to Chinese New Years and Chinese culture for younger students. Additionally, Sam and the Lucky Money can help instill the ideas of compassion and humility and allow students to discuss what it means to show compassion to those less fortunate.
Because the illustrations are so vivid throughout the entire book, Sam and the Lucky Money would also be a great book to utilize to discuss color theory and blending techniques with paint for younger students.
